I am happy to announce that I have just finished composing a work somewhat confidently titled Naxos and the Journey with Diafor the Atlantic Harp Duo, featuring harpists Elizabeth Jaxon and Marta Power Luce. Please visit their website to learn more about these two wonderful musicians and their work.
Naxos and the Journey with Dia is based on the myth of Ariadne, and my work is inspired by her journey with her great love, Theseus, to the island of Naxos. Their journey across the sea, as well as the story in its entirety, offered me as the composer so many dramatic possibilities, both literal and metaphorical. It has been exciting and challenging to weave a coherent work that blends their literal travels to Naxos with the overall drama of Ariadne’s story of love lost and found.
It’s been a pleasure to work with the Atlantic Harp Duo on this project. It’s a testament to the power of modern communications that we have been able to collaborate so effectively as I compose in the USA while they reside in Europe. I would sketch ideas. They would rehearse, record, and then send the recordings to me via email along with feedback thus influencing the way I was approaching the project. I look forward to working with them further as they begin to rehearse the piece this month for upcoming performances in the Fall.
